The meeting, which took place on August 15, 2024, in the Prestea Huni Valley
Municipality, brought together key stakeholders from Amenfi East, Amenfi West, and Tarkwa Nsuaem
districts.

The meeting aimed to bolster the region’s efforts in combating rabies, a deadly viral disease commonly
transmitted through the bites, scratches, or severe licking by infected dogs. The stakeholders,
representing various organizations, were tasked with coordinating and supporting efforts to prevent
rabies in their respective districts.

Participating organizations included the Ghana Health Service, Information Service Department,
Veterinary Service Department, Environmental Health Department, Ghana Education Service (SHEP),
NCCE, Assembly Members, Religious Leaders, Media, and Community Information Center Operators.
The representatives discussed strategies to prevent rabies and reviewed the necessary interventions
needed for effective implementation.

Mr. Richmond Guark, the Veterinary Technician for Prestea Huni Valley Municipality, detailed how the
rabies virus operates once it enters a host. He explained that the virus typically hides in the
hypothalamus of the brain and travels through the spinal cord. It's primarily found in the saliva of an infected dog and can be transmitted through bites, scratches, or even severe licking by the infected animal.

He further elaborated on the early signs and symptoms of rabies, which may include fever, headache,
excess salivation, muscle spasms, paralysis, and mental confusion. However, once these symptoms
appear, the disease is nearly always fatal. This underscores the critical importance of prompt action if exposed to the virus. Mr. Guake advised that immediate first aid—washing the affected area with
running water and soap—can significantly reduce the risk of infection. He urged anyone bitten or
scratched by a dog to seek medical attention immediately.

This information session, combined with the broader campaign efforts, is part of a concerted attempt to
educate the public and reduce the incidence of rabies in the Western Region. The stakeholders present
at the meeting committed to working together to implement these life-saving measures, ensuring that
the communities in the region are well-informed and adequately prepared to deal with potential rabies
threats. As the stakeholders' meeting in Prestea Huni Valley Municipality came to a close, participants reiterated their dedication to the success of the upcoming Anti-Rabies Campaign. The collective effort aims to create a ripple effect throughout the Western Region, educating communities on the dangers of rabies and the critical importance of vaccination.

The assembly members and local leaders present expressed their commitment to mobilizing their
communities and ensuring that the campaign's message reaches every household. Religious leaders, in
particular, pledged to incorporate rabies awareness into their sermons and community activities,
recognizing the influential role they play in shaping public attitudes and behaviors.

One key point of discussion was the need for sustained education in schools. Representatives from the
Ghana Education Service's School Health Education Programme (SHEP) highlighted the role that schools can play in disseminating information about rabies to young people. By educating students, they can become advocates within their families and communities, further spreading the campaign’s crucial
message.

The Information Service Department, tasked with the dissemination of information, committed to using
various media platforms, including radio and community outreach programs, to ensure that the
campaign’s themes are widely broadcasted. The department emphasized the importance of clear,
consistent messaging to combat myths and misinformation about rabies.

The Veterinary Service Department announced plans to conduct mass dog vaccination drives in the
prioritized districts. They called for the cooperation of local residents, urging them to bring their dogs for vaccination to prevent the spread of the disease. This initiative is seen as a vital step in reducing the incidence of rabies, as it directly addresses one of the main sources of transmission.

Environmental Health Officers, who play a crucial role in maintaining public health standards, also
committed to monitoring and supporting the campaign’s activities. They will work alongside the
Veterinary Service to ensure that vaccination efforts are coupled with public education on safe
interactions with animals.

Mr. Richmond Guake’s presentation on the signs and symptoms of rabies was a stark reminder of the
disease’s lethality. He explained that once symptoms appear, rabies is almost always fatal, making
prevention through vaccination and immediate treatment following exposure crucial. He stressed the
importance of quick action, reiterating that washing a bite wound with soap and water can significantly
reduce the risk of the virus taking hold.

The Global Media Foundation and The Light Foundation, as key partners in the campaign, expressed
their gratitude for the support from the various stakeholders.
