VICE PRESIDENT DR. MAHAMUDU BAWUMIA COMMISSIONS APPAITSE RECONSTRUCTED PROJECT.

In January 2022, a vehicle carrying about 10 tons of explosive to the Chirano Mines collided with a motorcycle, resulting in the detonation of the explosives, which destroyed the entire community.
After the unfortunate incident, the government immediately commenced the reconstruction process, which has seen the completion of 124 housing units and auxiliary facilities for the survivors.

Appiatse which is situated in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region has seen a transformation at the end. The Vice President of the republic of Ghana H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, on Thursday 2nd May 2024, commissioned and handed over the reconstructed Appiatse community to the residents.

Speaking to the gathering H.E Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia acknowledged the presence of the dignitaries and notified that on Thursday 20th January, 2022, the unfortunate tragedy incident occurred this same place we have gathered today, a sudden explosion shook our foundation, shorted many life and left scars urged deep in to our collective memory. It left the Appiatse community and indeed the entire country in a deep sorrow and distress.

On behalf of the president of the republic, Nana Addo Danquah Akuffo–Addo, I led the delegation which includes, the security agency, Nadmo, minsters and other officials of the presidency to commiserates with the unfortunate incidence by our people losing their lives and property and various degree of injuries as a total collapse of their entire community. Yesterday a candle night Virgil was held to commemorate the souls that lost their lives, their absence led an ache and envoy that cannot be replaced, may their soul continue to rest in perfect peace till we meet again on the day of the resurrection, he added.

He again said, we have gathered here today, not just to commemorate the tragic event but also to celebrate resilient, compassion and the indomitable spirit of the people of Appiatse while mourning those who lost their lives through this tragic incident, we stand in solidarity with the survivors who have both physical and emotional wounds, and recognized the effort of our emergency response team, exemplified selflessness as defines in our constitution, but adversity has a way of revealing our strength, a strength to revive and re-imagine and this tragedy is resilient to be built, the resilient to bring hope.

God is given as a message to us today, we have fire that destroyed this community in many ways, and here to commission this rebuilt community and God is sending down water, basically tells us it’s a blessing.

We thank the ministers and stakeholders involved who acted strictly to make this possible through the provision of relief items and temporal accommodation for the victims but we did not end up there, government took to itself to reconstruct the community to provide a permanent place of abode for the residence of this community and to restore them of hope, so when I came here immediately after the event, I made a promise that government will rebuild this community surely here we are today, government has fulfilled this commitment, today we stand in the principles of a new dawn, the rebirth of Appiatse, 124 housing unit together with other social amenities, we found strength in the face of diver station and unity of disintegration.

We are grateful to all who offered support whether through wealth of comfort, listened ears or, a temporal place of abode, we are again grateful to the committee, I’m happy that we have done this together, we need to be vigilant in our entire nation to prevent such disasters. Ladies and Gentlemen I cannot end my speech without paying a grooming tribute to H.E. the president Nana Addo who’s commitment and tenacity has ended up in the construction of the new community, as heard by the minister for lands and natural resources, president Akuffo Addo was the first to donate to the emergency fund as a sign of compassion and indication towards the rebuilding of this community.

In addition to this donation, president directed that 5 million dollars out the 6 million dollars
administrative fine imposed on the company and the center of the explosion be pay to the Appiatse support fund to support victims of this incident and the rebuilding of this community, such is a selflessness and compassionate gesture.

To indefatigable minister for land and natural resource, Hon. Samuel Abu Jinapor who has led this project from the beginning, thank you for your exemplary leadership, your commitment and relentless zeal has brought this far, this is why I refer to him as bulldozer minister. He just clears problems away and get things done. I’m aware of the several visit that you made to this community to see progress work and to ensure that the contractor do a perfect work.

He again commended Hon. Barbra Oteng Gyasi and the municipal chief Executive Hon. Isaac Dasmani for the effort towards the rebuilding of this beautiful community, he concluded. The Lands and Natural Resources Minister Hon. Abu Jinapor and Western Regional Minister Hon. Okyere Darkoh, similarly had the opportunity to address the gathering, they share their experiences so far and advised the residence to try as much as possible manage with their new living standard.

Hon. Barbra Oteng Gyasi the Board Chairperson of Minerals Commission and parliamentary candidate of NPP Prestea Huni-Valley Constituency as well donated some items to every household which includes, bags of rice, cooking oil and cooking utensils. The newly built structures ranges from one bedroom to seven bedroom units, with enhanced facilities, including market, six units’ classroom and kindergarten blocks, water and electricity, a drainage system and water storage system. Expressing their gratitude, all beneficiaries voiced out their satisfaction with the outcome.
