The Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) commenced across Ghana on Monday, with students
eagerly sitting for their first papers. The examinations are scheduled to conclude on Friday, marking a
critical milestone for the candidates.
Municipal Education Director, Mr. Sebastian Atrema Diaw, announced that a total of 4,984 candidates
have been registered for the examination in the municipality. This includes 2,442 boys and 2,542 girls
from 87 public schools and 67 private schools. Public schools have contributed 1,819 boys and 3,690
girls, while private schools have registered 623 boys and 1,294 girls.
The examinations are being conducted at 14 designated centers, with the support of 173 invigilators and
19 police officers to ensure smooth and secure operations. However, it was reported that eight
pregnancies have been recorded among candidates in some of the centers.
Reflecting on the previous year, there has been a slight decrease in the number of candidates. Last year, 5,130 candidates, comprising 2,580 boys and 2,550 girls, sat for the exams.
Municipal Chief Executive, Hon. Isaac Dasmani PhD, extended his best wishes to the students,
encouraging their parents to support them by minimizing house chores to allow ample time for studies
during these crucial days. He specifically addressed the pregnant candidates, urging them to endeavor to write their exams as there wouldn't be any opportunity to rewrite any missed papers. Dr. Dasmani
highlighted the potential benefits of excelling in their exams, including the prospect of benefiting from the free Senior High School (SHS) policy introduced by the President. He emphasized that those who
deliver can also further their education under the free SHS policy.
The BECE remains a pivotal examination for students in Ghana, determining their progression to Senior
High School. The community's support and encouragement play a vital role in ensuring the success and well-being of the candidates during this period.
